- Gibberellic Acid (GA),
which comes from a naturally occurring growth hormone, is a member of a
type of plant hormone called Gibberellins, which regulate the growth
rate of plants.
- Gibberellins have been
identified in many species (and are believed to
be present in all
plant species) of plants at various amounts in all parts of plants.
There are over 125 gibberellins that vary in structure and activity;
however GA3 is the most thoroughly studied.
- Gibberellic acid
stimulates the cells of germinating seeds to produce mRNA molecules that
code for hydrolytic enzymes.
- Gibberellic acid (GA) is
a very potent hormone whose natural occurrence in plants controls their
development. Since GA regulates growth, applications of very low
concentrations can have a profound effect.
- They are endogenous
hormones functioning as plant growth regulators
and influencing a
range of developmental processes in higher plants including stem
elongation, germination, dormancy, sex expression and fruit senescence.
- The filamentous fungus
Gibberella fujikuroi is the main producer of
gibberellins. These
hormones are widely used to optimise growth in several products,
particularly seedless grapes.
- The gibberellic acid
formed in the fermentation medium may be
isolated by filtration of
the medium and extration of the filtrate with an organic solvent or
by absorption with activated charcoal.
- GA3 has been obtained by
chemical synthesis, extraction from plants
and by microbial
fermentation. Stereospecific chemical synthesis involves multiple
steps and the use of expensive reagents.
- GA3 production in fungal
culture includes liquid surface fermentation,
submerged
fermentation, and solid state fermentation.
- It is a high-value
industrially important biochemical selling at $27-36/g on the
international market.
- Currently, GA3 is largely
produced by submerged fermentation of the
fungus Gibberella
fujikuroi on an industrial scale.
- The filamentous fungus
Gibberella fujikuroi is the main producer of
gibberellins. These
hormones are widely used to optimise growth in several products,
particularly seedless grapes.
- Gibberellic Acids are
applied to growing crops (field crops, small fruits,
vines and tree
fruits), ornamental and shade tress, and ornamental plants, shrubs
and vines.
- Gibberellic Acids, as
currently registered, will not cause unreasonable
risk to humans or
the environment. These uses are eligible for reregistration.
- During the colder months,
its production is low, hence plant growth is slower. The idea behind the
application of the hormone is that it will stimulate cell expansion,
resulting in leaf and stem elongation.
- Pesticides database
suggests that GA3’s acute toxicity, carcinogenicity,
ground water
contaminating characteristic, and developmental or reproductive
toxicity should be reevaluated.
- Despite advances in
fermentation technology, the cost of production of
GA3 has been a
deterrent to its widespread use.
- Gibberellins are known to
regulate gene expression in the aleurone layer of germinating cereal
seeds , in vegetative shoot tissue and in flowers .
