- Metaldehyde is an organic compound with
the formula (CH3CHO)4.
- It is commonly used as a pesticide against
slugs, snails, and other gastropods.
- It is the cyclic tetramer of
acetaldehyde.
- Metaldehyde is a white crystalline
substance isomeric with, and obtained from, acetic aldehyde by
polymerization, and reconvertible
into the same.
- Metaldehyde (C8H16O4) is not a complicated
chemical. In its base form, it is a white crystalline powder that does
not dissolve in water.
- Metaldehyde is obtained in moderate yields
by treatment of acetaldehyde with various acid catalysts, such as
hydrogen bromide.
- The reaction is reversible, upon heating
to about 80 °C, metaldehyde reverts to acetaldehyde.
- Metaldehyde exists as a mixture of
stereoisomers, molecules that differ with respect to the relative
orientation of the methyl groups
on the 8-membered ring.
- Metaldehyde is a selective pesticide used
by farmers and gardeners to control slugs and snails in a wide variety
of crops.
- Metaldehyde-containing baits should be
used with caution as they are toxic to dogs and cats.
- Metaldehyde is also used as a camping
fuel.
- Metaldehyde is a molluscicide used to
control snails and slugs on a wide variety of sites in agriculture and
home gardens, including fruit and vegetable crops, ornamentals, lawns
and turf.
- Metaldehyde may be applied with ground
equipment by professional applicators.
- Domestic users can apply metaldehyde by
hand to soil surfaces in and around home gardens.
- There is limited removal of metaldehyde
using standard pesticide removal techniques of ozone or granular
activated carbon (GAC).
- Metaldehyde is used in Washington table
beet seed production.
- The maximum level of metaldehyde in
treated drinking water reported to DWI to date is 1.03 μg/l.
- Farmers apply around 250 tonnes of
metaldehyde (an active substance in slug pellets) to agricultural land
every year. It helps to protect cereal, oil seed rape and other crops
from slug damage.
- More recently, other companies in the
midlands, eastern, south east and south of England have detected
metaldehyde in raw waters.
- Metaldehyde is the active ingredient in
most snail and slug baits, and has been in use in Australia for many
years.
- Metaldehyde is contained in slug pellets
used by 80% of farmers applying a molluscicide as part of their control
strategy for the UK’s most damaging pest. It is reported that slugs
account for 70% of all crop pest problems.
- Metaldehyde is a very important chemical
in grass seed production in western Oregon.
