- Metsulfuron-methyl is an
herbicide used to control select broadleaf weeds, trees and brush, and
some annual grasses.
- Metsulfuron-methyl is the
active ingredient (60%) in the herbicide products Escort XP and
Metsulfuron Methyl 60 DF.
- Metsulfuron methyl is a
sulfonyl urea herbicide initially registered by E.I. DuPont in 1986.
- Metsulfuron-methyl has
low to very low toxicity if people eat, touch, or inhale
residues.
- Persistence of
metsulfuron-methyl in soil mostly depends on soil properties, tillage
management and environmental factors.
- Plants rapidly take up
metsulfuron-methyl at the roots and through the leaves. It moves
throughout the plant, but it does not last.
- The principal degradation
pathways of metsulfuron-methyl in soil include chemical hydrolysis and
microbial degradation
- Metsulfuron-methyl is a
residual sulfonylurea compound, used as a selective pre- and post
emergence herbicide for broadleaf weeds and some
annual
grasses.
- Metsulfuron-methyl is
commonly used in forestry situations. It is usually used together with
other herbicides that control the weeds not susceptible
to
metsulfuron.
- Its mode of action is by
inhibiting cell division in the shoots and roots of the plant, and it is
biologically active at low use rates.
- Metsulfuron methyl is
used for control of broad leaf weeds like Chenopodium album, Melilotus
indica, Medicago hispida, Lathyrus aphaca,
Anagallis arvensis, Vicia
sativa, Vicia hirsura, Circiuma arvense in Wheat and Eclipta alba,
Luwigia parviflora, Marsilea quadrifoliata in Rice.
- Commercial metsulfuron
methyl products generally contain one or more inert
ingredients.
- Metsulfuron methyl is
applied by aerial spraying; spraying from ground equipment or a handgun
sprayer.
- Sulfonylurea herbicides
have high herbicidal activity at low application rates. Among
sulfonylurea products, metsulfuron-methyl [methyl
2-(4-methoxy-6-methyl-
1,3,5-triazine- 2- ylcarbamoylsulfamoyl)
benzoate] is widely used due to its selectivity against a wide range of
weeds in cereal, pasture, and plantation crop.
- Two commercial
formulations of metsulfuron methyl are available in the United States,
Ally and Escort, both produced by Du Pont as a dry flowable granule,
which is mixed with water and a surfactant and then applied as a
spray.
- Application of
metsulfuron methyl during dewatered conditions provided excellent
control of denseflower knotweed,
and frequency of desirable aquatic
grasses doubled within this treatment area |
