Sodium cyanide is an
inorganic compound with the formula NaCN. It is an inorganic salt
derived from neutralization reactions involving the weak acid
hydrogen cyanide.

Sodium cyanide is a
water soluble white solid which reacts with acids to form
hydrogen
cyanide gas. When perfectly dry, it is odorless. Due to its
alkalinity, it is corrosive to the skin. It is a strong reducing agent
which with acids liberate highly toxic
hydrocyanic acid gas.

produced by treating hydrogen cyanide with sodium hydroxide

Sodium cyanide was
initially registered as a pesticide on December 23, 1947, to control
ants on uncultivated agricultural and non-agricultural areas. Sodium
cyanide was also registered to control certain bacteria, insects,
and commensal rodents in human residences; railway cars; food marketing,
storage, and distribution facilities; and commercial institutional and
industrial premises.

The only currently
registered uses of sodium cyanide are for toxicant-filled capsules to be
placed in M-44 spring-loaded ejectors used to kill wild canids: coyotes
, wild dogs , red foxes , and gray foxes.

Sodium cyanide is highly
toxic to warm-blooded animals. Sodium cyanide has been placed in
Toxicity Category I.

Sodium cyanide is mainly
used to extract gold and other precious metals in mining.

Sodium cyanide is used
in the manufacturing of organic chemicals; acrylonitrile, metal
polishes, dyes, rodenticides, pesticides, synthetic fibers, plastics,
and electroplating solutions.

Australia is a major
global manufacturer and exporter of sodium cyanide, with manufacturing
facilities in western Australia .

About 100 000 tonnes of
sodium cyanide are manufactured each year, of which about 40%-60% is
exported. There are several companies that also import sodium cyanide
and/or reformulated small quantities. Imports have increased in 2008 as
compared to 2004 onwards.
