Profile at a Glance
  • Two decades ago, anthuriums were cultivated largely as a cut flower crop. Now, anthuriums are internationally produced and traded as both cut flowers and potted blooming plants.
  • Large anthurium nurseries can be found the world over:
  • The main Anthurium growing belts are the tropical areas of the world.
  • Anthurium is a genus of more than 800 species found in the New World tropics from Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay; species are also native to the West Indies.
  • They are grown for their brightly colored flower spathes and/or their ornamental leaves.
  • Shading from Sunlight is Necessary for Normal Growth for Anthuriums.
  • The Degree of Shading varies with the Cultivar, the Age of the Plant, and the climate under which it is grown.
  • The shade requirements usually range from 50% to 90% of full sunlight.
  • Insufficient Shading often results in damage to leaves and flowers, and may cause plant death.
  • Damage to flowers include fading of Spathes (especially pastels) and Burning of Spadices.
  • Many producers use saran cloth houses supported with lumber or Glavanized pipes and wire.
  • Fertilizing should not be an issue for quite a few months.
  • If you are going to fertilize, use a light solution of a 3:1:2 ratio and it is probably best to dilute to 1/4 strength.
  • New plants are established by dividing the roots in the spring and potting the separated pieces.
