- Ocimum comprises more than 30
species of herbs and shrubs from the tropical and subtropical
regions of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America, but the
main center of diversity appears to be Africa.
- Darrah classified the
O.basicum cultivars in seven types: tall slender types,
large-leafed robust types, dwarf types, compact types,
purpurascens, purple types, citriodorum types.
- The Perfume, Pharmacy, and
food industries use aromatic essential oils, extracted from the
leaves and flowers of Basil.
- The European type, a sweet
basil, is considered to have the highest quality aroma,
containing linalool and methylchavicol as the major
constituents.
- A basil from Java, Russia and
North Africa is rich in eugenol.

The anthocyanins
present in purple basils were analyzed utilizing high
performance liquid chromatography, spectral data, and plasma-desorption
mass spectrometry.

Purple basils contained very high concentrations of total
anthocyanins and are an abundant source of total anthocyanins
and may serve as a potential new source of stable red pigments
for the food industry.

Tulsi is one herb that possesses the anti-stress,
anti-bacterial, anti viral, anti fungal, anti protozoal, anti
oxidant and anti carcinogenic properties.

Methyl cinnamate,
linalool, 1,8-cineol, methyl chavicol, eugenol, methyl eugenol,
caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide and t-cadinol were common
compounds in all the oils of Ocimum varieties grown in Ibagué.

Chavicol O -methyltransferase
(CVOMT) and eugenol O -methyltransferase (EOMT) cDNAs were
isolated from the sweet basil variety EMX-1 using a biochemical
genomics approach.
