 Information Profile at a Glance
  • A bearing is a component used to reduce friction in a machine. Bearings may be classified broadly according to the motions they allow and according to their principle of operation
  • Bearings reduce friction by providing smooth metal balls or rollers, and a smooth inner and outer metal surface for the balls to roll against. These balls or rollers "bear" the load, allowing the device to spin smoothly.
  • Bearings typically have to deal with two kinds of loading, radial and thrust. Depending on where the bearing is being used, it may see all radial loading, all thrust loading or a combination of both.
  • There are many types of bearings, each used for different purposes. These include ball bearings, roller bearings, ball thrust bearings, roller thrust bearings and tapered roller thrust bearings
  • Some of the flywheels run at speeds in excess of 50,000 revolutions per minute (rpm). Normal bearings with rollers or balls would melt down or explode at these speeds. The magnetic bearing has no moving parts, so it can handle these incredible speeds.
  • The new San Francisco International Airport uses many advanced building technologies to help it withstand  earthquakes. One of these technologies involves giant ball bearings.
  • Air bearings are an excellent solution for applications requiring high levels of precision and performance. Air bearings exhibit frictionless motion and high resolution position control.
  • Excessive loads usually cause premature fatigue. Tight fits, brinelling and improper preloading can also bring about
early fatigue failure. The solution is to reduce the load or redesign using a bearing with greater capacity.
  • The bearing market is generally regarded as being part of the power-transmission market, which includes automotive transmission systems
  • Worldwide demand for bearings will grow 5.7 percent annually through 2007, driven by rising OEM output for bearing-consuming products, especially in developing regions. North America and Western Europe, however, will remain the major markets. Growth rates for ball versus roller bearings will not vary significantly
  • Manufacturers have raised the standards of performance for rotating equipment by providing robust, cost effective, easy to implement magnetic bearing solutions
