  • Calcium gluconate is a calcium salt of gluconic acid that may be used to replenish calcium in the body. calcium gluconate is a fine, white , odorless powder or white granular. It is toxic and physiologically excellent compatible.
  • Calcium gluconate a salt D(-)gluconic acid is prepared by fermentation of pure glucose and additional neutralization with lime or calcium carbonate. D(-) gluconic acid occurs naturally as a main metabolism product by decomposition of glucose in foodstuffs as wine or honey.
  • Calcium gluconate has a better reabsorption by oral applications or by injection than other calcium salts. Calcium gluconate is used to treat conditions arising from calcium deficiencies such as hypocalcemic tetany, hypocalcemia related to hypoparathyrodism and hypocalcemia due to eapid growth or pregnancy.
  • It is also used in the treatment of black widow spider bites to relieve muscle cramping and as an  adjunct in the treatment of rickets, osteomalacia, lead colic and magnesium sulfate overdosage.
  • Calcium Gluconate should be administered intravenously either directly or by infusion. The dose is dependent upon the individual requirements of the patient. Calcium Gluconate may also be administered by intermittent infusion at a rate not exceeding 200 mg/mm, or by continuous infusion.
  • Calcium gluconate is used in pharmaceutical industry as a source of calcium for treating calcium deficiency by oral or intravenous administration. It also finds a place in animal nutrition.
  • For obtaining calcium gluconate as a product, calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate is used as the neutralising
    agent. They are added to the nutritive broth accompanied by heating and vigorous stirring.
