- CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control,
and refers specifically to a
computer "controller" that reads G-code
instructions and drives the machine tool, a powered mechanical
device typically used to fabricate metal components by the selective
removal of metal.
- CNC was preceded by NC (Numerically
Controlled) machines, which were hard
wired to produce one specific
part. The first CNC systems used NC style hardware, and the computer was
used for the tool compensation calculations and sometimes for
editing.
- The introduction of CNC machines radically
changed the manufacturing industry.
Curves are as easy to cut as
straight lines, complex 3-D structures are relatively easy to produce,
and the number of machining steps that required human action have been
dramatically reduced.
- CNC controllers are used to control machines
and processes.
They provide capabilities ranging from simple
point-to-point linear control to highly complex algorithms with multiple
axes of control. CNC controllers are used to retrofit many types of
machine shop equipment.
- A CNC program is nothing more than another
kind of instruction set. It's written in sentence-like format and the
control will execute it in sequential order, step by step.
- Many forms of lettering and engraving systems
use CNC technology.
Waterjet machining uses a high pressure water
jet stream to cut through plates of material. CNC is even used in the
manufacturing of many electrical components.
- A CNC may also be programmed to allow for
wood grain, material type and special cutter requirements. Humans are
not able to balance all of these factors in a repeated way over extended
periods of time.
- CNC machines used to be associated with
high-volume production
due to the time involved in machine
programming. New computer technologies, along with software advances,
now allow easy programming of CNC machines for custom or one-of
parts.
- The susceptibility of a CNC machine to
different sources of noise and stray current will depend on how it was
originally connected to the power distribution system as well as how the
manufacturer originally designed the machine.
- Good practices for powering and grounding
this equipment, coupled with proven installation
and maintenance
procedures, is necessary to prevent malfunction, degradation, and damage
to the sensitive electronics within this equipment.
