Introductory Information
The main concern about phosphates is “eutrophication”: because phosphates are a key nutrient for plants, too much phosphate in water can lead to excessive growth of plants and algae. Eutrophication is a leading cause of impairment of many freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems in the world ; where phosphates are used in modern detergents and the proportion of
phosphate in sewage coming from detergent will be below 30%
Alternatives
A complete detergent product removes soil, controls water hardness and prevents soil and water hardness salts from depositing onto the cleaned articles and washing equipment parts ; Detergent is to be non-toxic ; environmentally friendly
Compare your choices to determine which product is the best
Challenges
Removing phosphate from detergents leads to performance challenges ; Enzyme stability is a challenge in phosphate-free formulations Consumers have increased awareness of the environmental issues around phosphates, but their expectations
regarding cleaning performance remain high
Companies in the Field
To comply with safety of environment & Humans, many companies have come
with alternate products which are phosphate free ; Material safety data sheets indicate compositions
Regulations
Developed World have brought in regulations to restrict the detergents which are not environmentally free
The Detergent Regulation was published on the 8 April 2004 and enters into force in 8 Octobe 2005 .
Rules are to regulate the criteria and test methods for the biodegradability of
surfactants, content of the Technical Dossier of surfactant, the additional requirements of labelling
of the detergent, content of the List of detergent composition, as well as data from that list which
should be made available to public.
