- Camellia sinensis is the tea plant,
the plant species whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce tea.
White tea, green tea, oolong and black tea are all harvested from this
species, but are processed differently to attain different levels of
oxidation.
- The beverage Green tea is a "true"
tea (i.e., Camellia sinensis) that has undergone minimal oxidation
during processing. Green tea is popular in Morocco, Taiwan, Hong Kong,
Japan, Korea, and the Middle East. Recently it has become more
widespread in the West, where traditionally black tea is
consumed.
- Green tea is the palest in color,
ranging from light green to light yellow in color. Green tea is not
oxidized; the leaves are steamed or baked immediately after being
plucked. They are then rolled and dried allowing the leaves to remain
green in color. Green tea is made from both new buds as well as young
leaves – “pluckers” take ‘two leaves and a bud’.
- Green tea and green tea extracts,
such as its component EGCG, have been used to prevent and treat a
variety of cancers, including breast, stomach, and skin cancers. It is
also used for improving mental alertness, aiding in weight loss,
lowering cholesterol levels, and protecting skin from sun damage.
- Tea is an evergreen bush that grows
in all soils. It requires a steady climate. Tea bushes grow to a
convenient height for picking; still even today it is intensive labor.
Sorting the tea is determined by many criteria, including the age of the
leaf, picking season, climate, soil type, as well as processing and
quality of the blend. Leaf size indicates quality and strength.
- The production and consumption of tea
worldwide has increased over the past decade, and this increase is
expected to continue, according to Chang and Yabuki. While the tea plant
(Camellia sinensis) grows well in Hawaii, high costs of production have
impeded commercial development of tea as a crop and commodity
here.
- Demand for green tea is increasing
world-wide because of interest in its medicinal value. There has been a
large market throughout Asia for the different forms of green tea and it
plays an important role in traditional diets.
- Worldwide tea production in 2001 was
over 3 million tons . The greatest production was from China and India,
which generated about half of the total world production. Indonesia, Sri
Lanka, and Kenya together account for another quarter of the total
production.
- China harvested nearly twice as much
area as India, and these two countries accounted for 58 percent of the
world’s tea acreage in 2000. India’s average tea yield was nearly 2.4
times larger than that of China in 2000 , while the average yield for
the Asia-Pacific region as a whole was 60 percent of the average yield
for the rest of the world.
- Tea is cultivated in about 36
countries all over the world, but production is heavily concentrated in
just a handful. In 2000, five countries (India, China, Sri Lanka, Kenya
and Indonesia) together produced almost 80% of the world’s tea9. While
India, China and Sri Lanka have long dominated world production, the
share of the African countries has increased dramatically over the last
two decades.
- Exports of tea during the first half
of 2006 increased significantly by 18.8 Mkg reaching 158.5 Mkg from
139.6 Mkg exported during the corresponding period 2005. Russia is
traditionally a tea drinking country and most Russian people starts the
day with a cup of tea rather than coffee or juice.
