- .PET is generally produced via two different routes;
Transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) with ethylene glycol
(EG) and direct esterification of purified terephthalic acid (TPA) with
EG.
- With the rising worldwide demand for polyethylene terephthalate,
prospective PET producers are faced with a lot of decision; whether to
use purified terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate as the raw
material, batch or continuous process, and whether to use the
conventional process or to add some modifications to reduce the costs
and increase the
productivity.
- The capital to construct a PET facility based on TPA is reported to
be at least 20 percent less than one based on DMT
- Polyethylene terephthalate is increasingly produced from very pure
terephthalic acid
- Raw Materials required: Ethylene Glycol, Terephthalic acid,
- PET, in its purest form, is an amorphous glass-like material. Under
the influence of direct modifying additives it develops crystallinity.
Also, crystallinity can be developed by heat treatment of the polymer
melt.
- PET is the most recycled domestic packaging
polymer;
- The three major packaging applications of PET are as containers
(bottles, jars and tubs), semi-rigid sheet for thermoforming (trays and
blisters) and thin oriented films (bags and snack food wrappers)
- PET is approved as safe for contact with foods and beverages by the
FDA and health-safety agencies throughout the world.
- PET is used extensively in the manufacture of synthetic fibers (i.
e., polyester fibers)
- Containers made of PET are being used for toiletries, cosmetics, and
household and pharmaceutical products (e. g., toothpaste pumps). Other
applications of PET include molding resins, X-ray and other photographic
films, magnetic tape, electrical insulation, printing sheets, and food
packaging film.
