- Expanded Polystyrene is
a lightweight, rigid, plastic foam insulation material produced from
solid beads of polystyrene.
It is produced when pentane is dissolved
in a polystyrene base material, which is then steam-heated to form EPS
beads.
- Expanded polystyrene
foam (EPF) is a plastic material that has special properties due to its
structure. Composed of individual cells of low density polystyrene, EPF
is extraordinarily light and can support many times its own weight in
water.
- Expanded polystyrene
product can contain up to 50% (on average 15%) recycled polystyrene.
Simple recycling involves the crumbling of old moulded product into
small pieces and remoulding into product with a significant portion of
freshly expanded product.
- EPS is produced in a
three stage process: Pre-expansion, Conditioning, Moulding, Shaping ,
Post-production processing.
- There are two moulding
processes for EPS - Block moulding , Shape Moulding.
- Expandable polystyrene
is the raw material or resin used for the molding of expanded
polystyrene products. It is manufactured in the form of very small
polystyrene beads with a weight-average molecular weight between 160,000
and 260,000 and contains 4 to 7%
blowing agent, usually pentanes or
butane.
- Expanded polystyrene
beads are used to Control Mosquito Breeding.
- Expanded Polystyrene is
used extensively in the creation of 3D props and displays.
- It is used in ground
improvement works.
- It is used in the
control of vector-borne diseases.
- EPF is used in
flotation devices, insulation, egg cartons, flats for meat and produce,
sandwich and hamburger boxes, coffee cups, plates, peanut packaging, and
picnic coolers.
- The expanded
polystyrene (EPS) packaging industry is at the forefront of plastics
recycling in the UK. The EPS Packaging Group is working hard to further
increase recycling levels through a programme of seminars, community
projects and practical assistance to waste holders.
- Building and
construction applications are the largest outlet for EPS accounting for
around two-thirds of demand.
- The EPS market has seen
strong growth globally, driven by the construction sector where it is
one of the top choices for insulation.
According to US-based
consultants CMAI, global demand grew at an average of 5.5%/year in the
2000-2006 period.
- The European insulation
market for EPS is expected to see more than 20% growth by 2010,
according to the manufacturer Nova Innovene.
- The world EPS market
made a spectacular recovery in 2006 and is performing very strongly
again in 2007. Almost every major market in the world did well, the
notable exception being North America and Southeast Asia.
- China remains the
largest market with 32 percent of world demand. It has recovered from
the 2005. contraction and is expected to continue to enjoy healthy
growth.
- China remains the
largest market with 32% of world demand, with domestic demand growth
substantially driven by the construction sector.
- China has recovered
from the 2005 contraction and is expected to continue to enjoy healthy
growth, currently assuming a new role as one of the major exporters to
the World market.
