- Furfuryl alcohol also
called 2-furylmethanol or 2-furancarbinol, is an organic compound
containing a furan substituted with a hydroxymethyl group. It is made
from furfural bymeans of catalysis with hydrogen added in.
- It is colorless to
light yellow color, transparent liquid with bitter almond smell and
becomes brown light yellow or deep red when exposed
in the air. It
can be mixed with water and many organic solvents such as alcohol,
ether, acetone etc, but not dissolved in paraffin wax and other
hydrocarbon products.
- Furfuryl alcohol is
manufactured industrially by the catalytic reduction of furfural which
is obtained from corncobs and sugar cane bagasse. It finds use as a
solvent, but is primarily used as an ingredient in the manufacture of
various chemical products such as foundry resins, adhesives, and wetting
agents.
- In order to establish
the fact that in this investigation furfuryl alcohol was produced in
skimmilk by heating. Five gallons of fresh raw skimmilk, were extracted
with ether and the ether extract concentrated in the same manner as
described for the heated skimmilk. The results of these tests are
sufficient evidence that furfuryl alcohol is not a normal constituent of
raw milk but is produced by heat treatment.
- Furfuryl alcohol has
been used in rocketry as a fuel which ignites hypergolically with nitric
acid oxidizer. This avoids needing separate igniters. It is one of the
organic synthetic raw materials. It can be used to produce all kinds of
furan resin, furfuryl alcohol resin and phenol resin and so on. It is
also the good solution of vanish and dye. It can be widely used in
sythetic febric, rubber, pesticide and foundry industry.
- The present paper
describes two chromatographic methods to determine free FA in several
kinds of foundry resins. The
complexity of their matrices and the
presence of interferents were considered.
- The accuracy of the
analytical procedure was assessed through recovery measurements. The
resins selected are the most representatives for the Portuguese
foundries: furanic, phenolic acid and phenolic alkaline.
- LC technique was also
succeeded when applied to furanic resins. Nevertheless, the existence of
interferents in the matrices hindered the use of this technique for
phenolic resins. Although the complexity of the foundry resins, the
sample pre-treatment selected was a simple extraction process, using
methanol as solvent. It was concluded that the developed methods can be
implemented in laboratories for routine analysis.
- China is the world's
largest producer of both furfural and furfuryl alcohol. Chinese
production of both materials has been increasing significantly. Furfural
and furfuryl alcohol production in China is expected to increase at an
average annual rate of about 5% over the next five years, but an
unexpected shortage of the raw material might affect sustained growth
during this period. China is the only major region where furfural
production is projected to increase in the next five years.
- The world's largest
furfural producer, Central Romana Corporation in the Dominican Republic,
has over 35 thousand metric tons of active annual capacity. According to
industry sources, Central Romana's annual furfural output is normally
near plant capacity; furfural production serves as the preferred method
of disposing of bagasse wastes from sugarcane sugar extraction. Central
Romana's furfural plants and the sugarcane processing plants generating
bagasse are under the same ownership.
