- Catalysts can be divided into two
main types - heterogeneous and homogeneous.
- Nickel is found in many ores as
sulfides, arsenides,
antimonides & oxides or silicates; chief
sources include chalcopyrite; others are pyrrhotite, pentlandite,
garnierite, niccolite, millerite.
- Nickel prices are the highest of
the common non-ferrous metals.
- Nickel is easier than palladium to
remove at the end of the manufacturing process, so it’s also less
expensive to purify the finished product.
- A process for nickel recovery from
a spent catalyst of definite composition has been developed using the
hydro-metallurgical route.
- The processing steps includes
direct sulphuric acid leaching followed by separation of iron as well as
silica and other impurities.
- The nickel based catalysts are
widely used in industry, e.g., in hydration, alkylation,
hydroalkylation reactions, cracking proceses.
- The catalyst provides high activity
a low de-activation rate, and resistance to changes in the
atmosphere.
- Raney nickel is a solid catalyst
composed of fine grains of a nickel-aluminium alloy, used in many
industrial processes.
- Raney-type catalysts were first
introduced in 1924; since then, these catalysts, both in powdered and
granular form, have been widely used in many commercial processes,
including hydrogenation of unsaturated organic compounds, such as
the catalytic hydrogenation of adiponitrile to
hexamethylenediamine, and of benzene to cyclohexane; they have also been
used in reductive reactions, as in the alkylation of carbonyl compounds
with amines; in the hidrogenolysis of esters and ethers; in fuel cell
electrodes and in dehalogenation
- Raney nickel is produced when a
block of nickel-aluminium alloy is treated with concentrated sodium
hydroxide.
- Activated Nickel Catalyst has a
very wide and growing applications in chemical industry. They are most
commonly used in slurry phase hydrogenation in batch processes using
stirred autoclave.
- Spent nickel catalyst is generated
by various chemical and industrial processes particularly in
hydrogenation of natural oils and fats.
- The new nickel-tin catalyst is
cheap enough to compete in the electricity and fuel markets, provided
the sugar water feed stock is available at low cost.
- The nickel based catalyst are
harmful for environment and nickel is a precious
element, so the
particular attention is paid to the recycling of spent catalysts and to
the extraction of nickel and other useful components
- There are two possible recycling
types of processes: pyroprocesses and hydroprocesses .
- In evaluating the market for
catalysts used in refineries to produce fuel, there is a fact that
catalysts are sold into two markets - new units being built to meet the
additional demand and existing units that continue to reload
catalysts.
