  • A napkin or serviette is a rectangle of cloth or paper used at the table for wiping the mouth while eating. It is usually small and folded.
  • Conventionally the napkin is folded and placed to the left of the place setting, outside the outermost fork. In an ambitious restaurant setting or a caterer's hall, it may be folded into more or less elaborate shapes and displayed on the empty plate. A napkin may also be held together in a bundle (with cutlery) by a napkin ring. Alternatively, paper napkins may be contained with a napkin holder.
  • Technological process for converting of napkins and handkerchiefs consists of the following stages: unwinding of paper reels, regulation of margins, satinizing, embossing, cutting and folding, counting, stacking and transport stetje, basic packaging, labelling , group packaging, wrapping of palettes.
  • Clearly the most important leaps in tissue making technology are centered around the production of structured tissue similar to TAD, which is today recognized as the best technology for making high quality, highly absorbent tissue in large quantities.
  • Tissue consumption is stagnating in Europe. An increasing number of tissue mills based in the Middle East are now exporting to Europe and displacing existing European mills because they are more price-competitive. Some Europeans are restructuring in an effort to cut costs and closing down European mills in the process.
  • Players in the tissue market could look to expand in the future, according to the latest figures. The value of the global tissue paper business is $30 billion, and the volume is over 20 million tonnes. North America and Europe account for over 60% of consumption. In the 1990s, the global market grew at a rate of close to 4%/yr.
  • World tissue paper demand is forecast to grow by 3.2%/yr up to 2010. The annual increase is about 780,000 tonnes, and the market is expected to reach 28.3 million tonnes by 2010. The growth corresponds to the combined capacity of 26 medium-size (30,000 tonnes/yr) or 13 large (60,000 tonnes/yr) tissue machines per year. Growth prospects are best in China and other Asia, where economic growth, rising standards of living, rapid growth of travel, hotel businesses and fast food chains all contribute to the demand growth.
  • World average per capita consumption of tissue paper is 3.4 kg. The differences between regions are huge. Per capita consumption levels are highest in North America (22 kg), western Europe (13 kg) and Japan (over 13 kg).
