- Pecan trees are among
the best, multi-purpose trees that can be grown in the Northern Rivers,
providing a valuable commercial nut crop, an excellent long-term
investment and great landscaping potential for the home gardener. The
nuts are among the most delicious of all the nuts,
as most people will agree after eating a scrumptious pecan pie or
licking pecan ice cream. Pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis) was originally
from the south east of the USA, but is now grown throughout the world in
suitable climates. Pecans were one of the most recently domesticated
major crops.
- Although wild pecans
were well-known among the colonial Americans as a delicacy, the
commercial growing of pecans in the United States did not begin until
the 1880s.[6] Today, the U.S. produces between 80% and 95% of the
world's pecans, with an annual crop of 150–200 thousand tonnes.[7] The
nut harvest for growers is typically around mid-October. Historically,
the leading Pecan-producing state in the U.S. has been Georgia, followed
by Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma; they are also grown in Arizona.
Outside the United States, pecans are grown in Australia, Brazil, China,
Israel, Mexico, Peru and South Africa. They can be grown approximately
from USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9, provided summers are also hot and
humid.
- If the soil is very
acid, heavy lime applications may be necessary. In such a case
two-thirds of the recommended agricultural lime must be distributed over
the entire area 12 months before planting, mixed into the topsoil by
disking, and then ploughed in as deeply as possible. Because calcium
moves very slowly in the soil, it is essential to work it into the
future root zone of the trees.
- A cover crop can then
be planted and ploughed in 6 months later. This will increase the
organic matter content of the soil. The remaining lime and all the
required phosphate must be applied and lightly worked in simultaneously.
The trees can then be planted 3 months later.
- If soil samples have
not been taken early enough to proceed as described, two-thirds of the
lime must be mixed with the soil and ploughed in deeply; the phosphate
and the rest of the lime are then distributed and worked in lightly. If
large quantities of lime are required, this must be applied at least 3
months before planting, thoroughly mixed with the soil and worked in
deeply.
- Sixteen essential
elements are known to be needed for plant growth. However, most pecan
research has shown increases in yield and nut quality only when a few of
these elements are supplied to orchard trees. The greatest response
reported has been from using nitrogen (N) on soils deficient in this
element.
- Bareroot pecan trees
can be planted from December through mid-March in most of Texas. It is
important that roots remain slightly moist, but not wet, at all times
between nursery digging and planting. If you are not ready to plant at
the time of purchase, "heel them in" by placing the roots in a trench or
hole and covering them with moist soil. Trim off all broken roots
immediately before planting.
- Pecans are grown
primarily in the eastern area of North Carolina in well-drained soils.
Pecan acreage is increasing in North Carolina with growers looking to
diversify their farming operations. However, pecans must be viewed as a
long-term investment with 20 to 23 years required for breaking even.
- The larger wood,
3/8-‑ to 3/4‑inch diameter, is best for patch budding, while medium‑size
scions, 1/4-‑ to 1/2‑inch diameter, are preferred for grafting. The best
wood is found on young, vigorous trees and in the tops of mature trees.
Trees pruned heavily (dehorned) will force vigorous new growth
satisfactory for propagation wood. Label all wood as it is cut from the
parent tree to avoid errors in identification.Do not allow the wood to
dry out before it is placed in storage. Moist burlap sacks wrapped
around the wood serve this purpose well.
- Weigh out 20 g
of pecan halves and spray kernels with water using an atomizer spray
bottle to an 11.6% moisture content. Drain excess water off kernel
surfaces and lace sprayed pecans in Zip- Loc™ freezer bags.
