  • Polybutylene (polybutene-1, poly(1-butene), PB-1) is a polyolefin or saturated polymer with the chemical
    formula (C4H8)n.
  • Polybutylene is a form of plastic resin that was used extensively in the manufacture of water supply piping
from 1978 until 1995. Due to the low cost of the material and ease of installation, polybutylene piping systems were viewed as "the pipe of the future" and were used as a substitute for traditional copper piping.
  • Polybutylene has a semi-crystaline structure, meaning its constituent atoms are bonded into a regular structure
only over small areas, with the rest of the material bonding in an ill-defined manner.
  • Polybutylene resins are semicrystalline highly isotactic thermoplastics derived from the polymerization of butene -1 monomer with or without other alpha - olefin monomers utilizing Zieglar - Natta type of catalysts.
  • Polybutene is widely used in lubricant for modifying / improving the viscosity of the lubricant formulation to the desired final viscosity.
  • Polybutene acts as a Polymer extender , Plasticiser, Tackifier and Wetting agent.
  • Polybutene can improve the melt flow in crystal polystyrene, better than mineral oil while maintaining higher strength and heat deflection temperature.
  • Polybutenes can be used to modify the Asphalt that can be used in road construction. The addition of polybutenes to asphalt give improved flexibility in low temperature, better weathering and an excellent aggregate/binder adhesion.
  • For a wide variety of vulcanized elastomers like natural rubber, butyl rubber, polyisoprene, PB, ethylene-alpha olefin rubber and SBR, KVIS polybutenes are used as extenders and plasticizers.
  • Polybutylene based blends are suitable as the peel seal coating layer of lid stocks which may be used as the lid
or top web for the containers made of polypropylene and polyethylenes.
  • Polybutene consumption is most influenced by the market for fuel and oil additives, which in turn, is a function of lubricant sales. Lubricant sales in the US are growing at slightly better than 1%/year.
  • Highly reactive polyisobutylene (HR-PIB) competes with conventional polybutenes in the fuel additives market. In this sector, it is growing at 1 to 2%/year, while conventional polybutenes are flat to declining.
