  • Popcorn or Popping Corn is a type of corn which explodes from the kernel and puffs up when heated. Special varieties are grown to give improved popping yield.
  • Popcorn varieties are broadly categorized by the shape of the kernels, the color of the kernels, or the shape of the popped corn. While the kernels may come in a variety of colors, the popped corn is always white as it is only the hull (or pericarp) that is colored.
  • Popcorn is produced by heating kernels until the internal moisture expands and pops through the outer shell of the kernel, allowing the starch within to expand and cool.
  • The all-important raw material will be maize grains. Salt, spices etc. shall be available locally. Attractively designed and colourful polythene bags shall be required for inner packing and large sized bags for outer packing for which prior arrangements shall have to be made.
  • Producers and sellers of popcorn consider two major factors in evaluating the quality of popcorn: what percentage of the kernels will pop, and how much each popped kernel expands. Expansion is an important factor to both the consumer and vendor. For the consumer, larger pieces of popcorn tend to be more tender and are associated with higher quality. For the grower, distributor, and vendor, expansion is closely correlated with profit: vendors such as theaters buy popcorn by weight and sell it by volume. For both these reasons, higher-expansion popcorn fetches a higher profit per unit weight
  • Processed popcorn includes pre-popped popcorn as well as microwave popcorn. Recently, microwave popcorn has lost popularity in Korea due to consumer perceptions that it contains high levels of trans fat.
  • Popcorns are fast moving consumables, and with changing life styles and eating habits, have become a favourite item with children and youngsters alike. It is a low cost and nutritious item and is consumed regularly.
  • Popcorn imports to Korea began approximately 20 years ago. Demand for popcorn continues to increase, especially in the movie theater and multiplex cinemas industry. In addition to strong demand for imported popcorn, Korean consumers consume even more white corn in the form of popped kernels. Imports of processed popcorn have declined in recent years.
  • The United States exported nearly $7 million of popcorn to South Korea. White popcorn topped imports at $3.2 million; yellow popcorn came to $2.4 million; and microwave, $1.24 million.
  • ConAgra Foods is the largest snack food manufacturer of microwave popcorn in the world with sales in more than 30 countries and branded labels such as ACT II, Orville Redenbacher, Crunch 'n Munch and Jiffy Pop.
  • Steady growth in consumer demand has elevated the industry to one that regularly produces over one billion pounds of shelled popcorn in 25 states. An average American consumes nearly 70 quarts of popped popcorn per year.
