- The purpose of an oil filter is to remove impurities from the oil
used to lubricate an internal-combustion engine
- A hot-drained oil
filter still contains up to 0.2 gallons of oil that has been absorbed
into the filter element
- One gallon of oil can contaminate one million
gallons of drinking water
- There are two types of oil filters: terne-plated
and non-terne-plated.
- EPA regulation changed
and now only considered terne-plated filters as hazardous. These filters
remain on the hazardous list because the amount of lead they contain
exceeds RCRA standards - Co-generation plant cleanly converts the
paper, gasket rubber, and paint in the oil filters into electrical
energy and use the waste heat to recycle oil, antifreeze and cleaning
solvent
- The filters are collected and stored in containment units
and shipped to a materials processing facility. The oil remaining in the
filters is then drained and collected, and the casings are shredded so
the paper inside can be removed. Once the paper is removed, the residual
oil is extracted, and the paper is used as a high-BTU fuel. The oil
collected is shipped to a refinery where it gets re-refined for reuse
