- Sodium percarbonate is a white crystalline water-soluble chemical
compound of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide.
- It is an oxidizing agent and ingredient in a number of home and
laundry cleaning products.
- Sodium percarbonate is a metastable substance and the bond between
the peroxygen atoms can be broken giving rise to a decomposition
producing sodium carbonate, steam or water, oxygen and heat
- Sodium percarbonate obtained by the reaction of sodium carbonate
solution with 40 – 70 % hydrogen peroxide solution is currently
manufactured in the EU using the wet crystallisation process and by the
dry fluidised-bed process.
- Sodium percarbonate is manufactured by the chemical reaction of
sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide and is mainly used as a bleaching
agent in laundry detergent powders, stain removal and food processing.
- Sodium percrabonate has a wide range of applications in various
solid detergent products, cleaning agents and all fabric bleaches.
- We may also find its usages in oxygen release compositions, personal
care formulations, disinfectants, food bleaches, pulp and paper bleaches
and textile bleaches, etc.
- Sodium percarbonate is an environmentally friendly chemical which
decomposes into oxygen, water and natural soda ash when in contact with
hydrous media.
- Sodium percarbonate is effective as a disinfectant on both bacteria
and virus. It’s an excellent ingredient in personal care and home care
formulations for hygiene.
- Sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate was not very toxic in acute oral or
dermal toxicity studies in laboratory animals.
- Sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate is very unstable in the presence of
water and rapidly breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and sodium
carbonate, with hydrogen peroxide being the pesticidally-active
component.
- The most hydrogen peroxide companies began increasing their capacity
as a result of the double digit demand growth then being experienced and
the speculation would favor the use of total chlorine–free (TCF)
bleaching for bleached wood pulp production.
- In three years time, hydrogen peroxide capacity in the U.S.
increased by 40 percent.
- Demand for hydrogen peroxide in the US is forecast to increase 3.6
percent annually to more than one billion pounds in 2006.
- Demand for hydrogen peroxide has grown rapidly over the last decade,
primarily due to the replacement of chlorine as the primarily bleach
used by the pulp and paper industry.
- Sodium percarbonate is an inorganic, water soluble solid of
relatively low molecular weight.
- The water solubility of sodium percarbonate is 140 g/l at 20
ºC. Sodium percarbonate rapidly dissolves in water and dissociates into
sodium ions, carbonate ions and hydrogen peroxide.
