- Sodium
silicate, also known as water glass or liquid glass, available
in aqueous solution and in solid form, is a compound used in
cements, passive fire protection, refractory, textile and
lumber processing.
-
There are two processes for preparing water glass that are
common this day. The first one is by reaction in liquid phase
while the next one is by reaction in solid phase. However,
alkaline and quartz sand are the same raw materials used in the
two processes
- Sodium
silicates are solids where the proportion between silicon,
oxygen and sodium determines what will be the resulting
silicates
- Sodium
silicates are manufactured by fusing sand (SiO2) with an
adjusted amount of sodium carbonate to glass. This is then
pulverized and dissolved in water at high temperature and
pressure to water glass.
- Soluble
sodium silicates (or waterglass) are solutions of water and
soluble glasses manufactured from varied proportions of
Na2CO3and SiO2.
- Sodium
silicates are especially valuable as adhesives because they can
change from a liquid to a semi-solid condition upon the loss of
a small amount of water.
- Sodium
silicates are used for de-inking, sizing, coating, and bleaching
of recycled paper products in the pulp and paper industry. The
de-inking process solubilizes and removes nonfibrous materials,
such as inks, from the fiber stock.
- Sodium
silicate solutions react with solutions of many soluble salts to
form complex gelatinous precipitates. For instance, aluminum
salts react withsodium silicate solutions to form sodium- aluminum silicate gels
which can be processed to make base-exchange materials
particularly suitable for water softening.
- Sodium
Silicate is a best water proofing agent and it is also used in
cement industries.
- Sodium
silicate based thermal interface pastes give higher thermal
contact conductance across conductor surfaces than polymer based
pastes and oils, due to their higher fluidity and the consequent
greater conformability.
- The sodium
silicate solution can be used easily in detergent slurry in an
effort to control the viscosity at an appropriate level for
powder detergent production giving optimal density.
- Sodium
silicate is widely used as a binder for molding sand in
foundries. The technology for perlite/sodium silicate composite
manufacture is based largely on this foundry industry
experience.
- A variety
of solid-state NMR techniques were applied in order to assign
resonances in the 29Si and 23Na NMR spectra of a new crystalline
silicate to crystallographically distinct silicon and sodium
sites, respectively.
- The sodium
silicate market is mature as many of its end uses are mature as
well. Only modest aggregate growth for sodium silicate
applications is projected; 0.7 percent annually through 2004.
- The major
consumers of sodium silicate are soap industry, silica gel
industry, textile industry and paper industry. Of these, the
largest consumer is the soap industry. About 520 kg of sodium
silicate is required per tonne of soap manufactured. The total
capacity of the operating soap units in the NER is estimated to
be 50 tonne per day. The demand of sodium silicate for these
units is estimated at 25 tonne per day.
- The sodium
silicate market size was valued at USD 5.82 billion in 2015. The
product has high demand in the petrochemical industry as
cracking catalyst. The growth
of refining activities is anticipated to raise demand for
cracking catalysts, which in turn is expected to have a positive
impact on the industry growth over the forecast period.
