Jeera Industry @ a Glance
- Cumin is the seed of a small umbelliferous plant. The seeds
come as paired or separate carpels, and are 3-6mm (1/8-1/4 in)
long. They have a striped pattern of nine ridges and oil canals,
and are hairy, brownish in colour, boat-shaped, tapering at each
extremity, with tiny stalks attached.

wuih heung ,Green cumin, White cumin, Cummin ,Kreuzkümmel,
Weißer Kreuzkümmel, Römischer Kümmel, Mutterkümmel ,Jiru,Safaid
jeera ,Jirige ,Jintan, Jintan putih, Jintan puteh ,Jirakam ,Duru,
Suduru ,Jirah, Zeera, Zira
- The fruits contain 2.5 to 4% essential oil. In the essential
oil, cumin aldehyde (p-isopropyl-benzaldehyde , 25 to 35%),
furthermore perilla aldehyde, cumin alcohol, a- and ß-pinene
(21%), dipentene, p-cymene and ß-phellandrene were found.
In toasted cumin fruits, a large number of pyrazines has been
identified as flavour compounds
- Cumin is a most popular
spice all over the world, especially in Latin America, North
Africa and all over Asia, but least so in Europe.
- Main production countries today are India, Iran, Indonesia,
China and the South Mediterranean.
- India is the largest producer and consumer of cumin seed in the
world. Cumin seed is almost exclusively cultivated in
Rajasthan and Gujarat.
- India exports cumin seed to Bangladesh,
Brazil, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore,
UAE, UK, the US and many other countries and cumin seed powder
to UK, the US, etc.
- Out of the 80,000-170000 tons of cumin grown in India each
year, only 10 % is actually exported.
