  • Each cell is encircled by a membrane and most cells are equipped with an extensive intracellular membrane system. Membranes fence the cell's interior off from its surrounding. They let water, certain ions and substrates into the cell, are vital for the cell's energy budget and they excrete substances. They protect the cell. Without them would the cell contents diffuse into their surroundings, information containing molecules would be lost and the metabolic pathways would seek a thermal equilibrium: the death of each living system.
  • In medicine, microbiology, cellular physiology and biochemistry a membrane is a thin layer that separates various cellular structures or organs. It usually includes lipid bilayer reinforced by proteins and other macromolecules. Artificial, semipermeable membranes which are used to separate species in a fluid on the basis of size, charge or other characteristics. Such membranes are employed in a range of applications from water and wastewater treatment, diffuser (sewage), landfill liners (nanofiltration, ultrafiltration and microfiltration) to hydrogen fuel cells.
  • The cell membrane (or plasma membrane) surrounds all living cells, and is the cell's most important organelle. It controls how substances can move in and out of the cell and is responsible for many other properties of the cell as well. The membranes that surround the nucleus and other organelles are almost identical to the cell membrane. Membranes are composed of phospholipids, proteins and carbohydrates arranged in a fluid mosaic structure.
  • One universal feature of all cells is an outer limiting membrane called the plasma membrane. In addition, all eukaryotic cells contain elaborate systems of internal membranes which set up various membrane-enclosed compartments within the cell.Cell membranes are built from lipids and proteins.
  • The plasma membrane serves as the interface between the machinery in the interior of the cell and the extracellular fluid (ECF) that bathes all cells. The lipids in the plasma membrane are chiefly phospholipids like phosphatidyl ethanolamine and cholesterol. Phospholipids are amphiphilic with the hydrocarbon tail of the molecule being hydrophobic; its polar head hydrophilic.
  • The cell is not an amorphous sack of components, but a complex structure filled with organelles. Membranes are not passive barriers. Membranes are dynamic. Membrane receptors bind specific messenger molecules on the exterior surface of the cell. The acetylcholine receptor of nervous tissue exemplifies a direct response type of receptor. The receptor is a complex pentameric protein which forms a channel through the membrane.
  • Membrane protein is generally soluble only in the presence of micelles; thus, it is very diffi cult to characterize the oligomerization state of the membrane protein in a lipid-containing solvent. In order to keep the membrane protein in solution, it was necessary to use a mobile phase that contained lipids at greater than the critical micelle concentration.
  • Water utilities nationwide are turning to membrane filtration to meet more stringent federal drinking water regulations in order to remove turbidity, precursors, and disinfectant tolerant microorganisms from both groundwater and surface water supplies. Amniotic membrane, the innermost layer of fetal (or placental) membrane, consists of a thick basement membrane and an avascular stroma. Its function is to protect the fetus from unwanted maternal insults during development.
  • There are five important characteristics of semi permeable membranes which determine their quality namely,Salt rejection efficiency , Flux , tolerance to temperature, pH variations, chemical constituents , Fouling tendency and durability. A membrane separation system separates an influent stream into two effluent streams known as the permeate and the concentrate. The permeate is the portion of the fluid that has passed through the semi-permeable membrane. Whereas the concentrate stream contains the constituents that have been rejected by the membrane.
  • Membranes have gained an important place in chemical technology and are used in a broad range of applications. The key property that is exploited is the ability of a membrane to control the permeation rate of a chemical species through the membrane. In controlled drug delivery, the goal is to moderate the permeation rate of a drug from a reservoir to the body.
