- Powdered milk is a powder
made from dried milk solids. Powdered milk has a far longer shelf life
than liquid milk and does not need to be refrigerated due to its low
moisture content.
- Powdered milk was first
made in 1802 by Russian doctor Osip Krichevsky. It is found abundantly
in many developing countries because of reduced transport and storage
costs. Like other dry foods it is considered nonperishable and is favored
by survivalists, hikers and other people in need of nonperishable easy
to prepare foodstuffs.
- Instant milk powder is
produced by partially rehydrating the dried milk powder particles
causing them to become sticky and agglomerate. The water is then removed
by drying resulting in an increased amount of air incorporated between
the powder particles.
- Milk powder manufacture is
a simple process now carried out on a large scale. It involves the
gentle removal of water at the lowest possible cost under stringent
hygiene conditions while retaining all the desirable natural properties
of the milk - colour, flavour, solubility, nutritional value.
- Milk powder manufacturing
plants tend to be very large, few in number and located in rural areas.
If modern and well managed, they have only relatively small effects on
the environment. They are moderately energy intensive, burning coal or
gas and consuming substantial electricity.
- Milk powder process
includes spray drying, fluid bed processing, extraction, evaporation and
freeze drying. Other processes are freeze concentration, filteration,
and homogenisation.Milk Powder is created by dehydrating fresh full
cream, half skimmed or fully skimmed milk through industrial processes.
When powdered milk is restored to a liquid form, it continues to
maintain its distinguished smell and taste and is fully dissolved in
water.
- Powdered milk can be
reconstituted and then pasteurized (O.H.T) before it can be used for
drinking purposes. It can be used to produce products such as: yogurt
(100%), feta cheese (20%), children’s food stuffs (10%), chocolate
(20%), etc. through fermentation. It can also be used in the production
of ice-creams, chocolate, biscuits and processed meat.
- Egypt imports milk powder
from several countries, including the US, France, New Zealand, Denmark,
Poland, Australia, Sweden, Germany, Holland, the UK, Belgium, Ireland,
Spain, Finland, the Czech Republic, China, Togo, Turkey and Bulgaria.
The US has the highest market share of total imports of 26%, and is
followed by France 11%, and New Zealand 9%.
- Milk powder imports are
currently subject to licensing by the TBL to ensure that stipulated
health requirements are met. This licensing regime, therefore, provides
the ideal vehicle for the verification of approved importers before
import entries are approved by the Customs Department.
