- The seed from the tree (Myristica fragrans) is called
nutmeg and the yellow to red aril covering the seed is called mace.
- The main countries of production are Indonesia, Grenada, Sri
Lanka, Trinidad, China and India.
- India is a net importer of nutmeg.
- Nutmeg essential oil can be prepared by distillation.
- Nutmeg and mace oleoresins are extracted from the plant using
organic solvents. They are produced for commercial flavourings and
perfumes.
- Major producers are Indonesia and Sri Lanka. The major market is the
USA (75%). Some European oil is distilled from Grenadian nutmegs and
in general the yield on steam distillation is about 11% oil.
- The nutmeg essential oil contains up to 84% Trimyristin
- Most of the production of nutmeg oil is for use in cola flavours
with smaller amounts used in meat seasonings and bakery products
- European Countries use Nutmeg as Spice
- Myristica fragrans possesses anticonvulsant property
- Indonesia exports 80% of the world nutmeg oil requirements
- Nutmeg prices to continue to increase due to decreasing yields
related to disease and pest.
