• Oxygen is a clear, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that dissolves in water.It is the second largest component of the atmosphere, comprising 20.8% by volume.It will react with nearly all organic materials and metals.
• It is supplied by diffusion of atmospheric (air)oxygen into the water and by production of oxygen from photosynthesis by aquatic plants. Wind, waves,and tumbling water in fast-moving streams increase the rate of diffusion.
• Both aquatic plants and animals depend on dissolved oxygen (D.O.) for survival.
• There is no substitute for oxygen in any of its uses. It cannot be reclaimed or recycled except via the atmosphere.
• A major industrial use for oxygen is in steel making where it purifies liquid iron in a furnace (the basic oxygen furnace) to produce steel by oxidising the principal contaminants eg carbon, sulphur, phosphorous, silicon and manganese which can then be readily removed.
• Oxygen is also used in the smelting of copper, lead, antimony and zinc. Chemical manufacturing is also a large user of oxygen.In the pulp and paper industries, oxygen is needed to burn the lime necessary to prepare or reconstitute the white liquor. It may also be used to dilignify and bleach wood chips, increasing the quality and the yield of the pulp.
• Low blood oxygen can be improved by giving supplemental oxygen as precisely and as carefully as any other drug.
• A lack of oxygen often causes corrosion on metallic materials in pipelines of the public water supply mains.

• Oxygen enrichment reduces or eliminates the need for combustion air, resulting in less nitrogen oxide production.Oxy-fuel combustion also increases the flame temperature without increasing fuel cost.
• Home respiratory therapy is the delivery of oxygen therapy, respiratory medications, and sleep disorder products to patients with conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer, and sleep apnea.
• Oxygen is classified as a 2.2 (non flammable gas) and 5.1 (oxidising agent) Dangerous Substance for the purpose of transport.
