- Cymbopogon martini belongs to
family Poaceae that yields important oil having good export
demand.
- The grass grows wild in India,
particularly northeast of Bombay toward the Himalaya mountains, Nepal
and to a lesser extent, in Pakistan. The grass has been planted in the
seychelle islands and in the comoro islands in the Indian
Ocean.
- Palmarosa oil is a pale yellow
or pale olive liquid with a sweet, floral rosy odor and various
backnotes or topnotes according to the quality and age of the oil.
Palmarosa oil blends well with all the conventional soap perfume
materials and it forms an excellent base with small amounts of geranium
oil and oakmoss concrete or absolute.
- The name geranium palmarosa is a
carryover from the days when palmarosa oil was used as an adulterant for
Turkish rose oil.
- The oils is extensively used as
substitute of attar or roses and as base for perfumes and cosmetics.
Palmarosa oil along with sandalwood oils is used mosquito repellent
ointments.
- It has been used medicinally as
an antiseptic. Used cosmetically for its ability to penetrate cells. Is
stimulating, hydrating, calming and used to treat physiological skin
imbalances and wrinkles. Used in facials, masks, compresses, massage,
baths, lotions, perfumery and in diffusors.Used in aromatherapy for its
uplifting quality.
- The oil content is low in the
first year and it increases with the age. On an average the oil content
may range from 0.2-0.3 %. An oil yield of about 220-250 kg per hectare
may obtained from second year onwards.
