  • Peanut butter is a food made of roasted and ground peanuts, usually salted and sweetened. It is commonly sold in grocery stores, but can be made at home.
  • Peanut butter is frequently used in sandwiches, particularly the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, candy, cookies and pastry.
  • Peanut butter is a good and inexpensive source of protein. Peanut butter can be safely stored at room temperature
    and requires no refrigeration.
  • All of the peanuts used for peanut butter are grown in the USA, either in the Southeast (Georgia) or the Southwest (Texas and Oklahoma). The two best-tasting varieties for peanut butter are Spanish and Runners.
  • Peanut butter is produced from groundnut kernels by roasting, grinding and mixing processes.
  • Peanut allergy is the most common life-threatening food allergy in children.
  • Certain brands of peanut butter may contain a small amount (well under 1%) of hydrogenated vegetable oils, which are rich in trans fatty acids.
  • For manufactured foods, ingredient labels need to be checked for items such as ground nuts, earth nuts,
monkey nuts, goober nuts, mixed nuts and peanut butter. Unrefined or gourmet peanut oil is likely to be a
    problem.
  • Quality control is handled by the Peanut Administrative Committee, which is an arm of the USDA. Raw peanut responsibility rests with the Department of Agriculture. During and after manufacture, quality control is under the supervision of the FDA.
  • The peanut butter industry is an important processed food industry in the U.S.
Approximately fifty-three percent of all domestically produced peanuts are used in the production of peanut butter.
  • China,United States, and Argentina have led the exports of edible peanuts (i.e., peanuts not used for crushing for oil and meal production). The European Union and Asia have remained as the major world importers of peanuts.
  • In the United States and most of the 53 peanut-producing countries in the world, the production and consumption of peanuts, including peanut butter, is increasing.
  • The quality of peanuts continues to improve to meet higher standards. The convenience peanut butter offers its users and its high nutritional value meet the demands of contemporary lifestyles.
