Information profile @ a Glance
- Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN) is a compound commonly used
industrially in the manufacture of detonating fuse and therapeutically
as a vasodilator
- PETN – C5H8O12N4 – is a white crystalline substance that feels
powdery to the touch. In its pure form, PETN melts at 141.3 degrees
centigrade
- PETN remains one of the most powerful conventional explosives ever
developed, rivaled only by HMX and RDX .The military, as might be
expected, is the largest user of PETN, with annual purchasing well over
2,000 tons. Nonmilitary use is primarily limited to demolition work and
as a booster material for secondary explosives such as ANFO, dynamite ..
- PETN can be made in a number of different ways, but the overall
process is always the same.
- PETN does not occur naturally, so the production and use of this
kind of compound can lead to contamination of the environment.
- PETN's preparation involves the nitration of pentaerythritol with a
mixture of concentrated nitric and sulfuric acid. The preferred method
of nitration is the ICI method, which utilizes concentrated nitric acid
(98%+) alone, as mixed acid can create unstable sulfonated by-products.
- PETN is subject to biodegradation in untreated or unpreserved urine
and feces. There also have been some reports of its degradation by
bacteria, whose PETN reductase sequentially denitrates PETN into tri-
and dinitrates
