Information @ a
glance
- About 20,000 plastic
bottles are needed to obtain a tonne of plastic.
- Recycling PET bottles saves 84% of the energy it takes to make
new PET bottles from raw materials.
- Contamination is a problem for PET recycling. Making quality
recycled PET relies on recycled materials having few contaminants
- Pet recycling options are: Textile reprocessing,
Physical recycling & Chemical recycling
- There are a number of emerging technologies that are generically
referred to as
depolymerization processes. These processes -- like glycolysis and
methanolysis – break down the PET plastic into its individual
chemical components, which can then be recombined back into PET
plastic. While not used extensively, these technologies are employed
when the economics warrant
- Cost estimation and profitability analysis for alkaline
hydrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate waste (pETW) has been
undertaken for a batch process and found to be viable
- The quality of the final products made from recyclate depends on
the performance of the process technology of collection, selection,
cleaning and final processing and requires a high amount of
production know-how.
- Recycled PET is manufactured into numerous products. The five
major generic end-use
categories for recycled PET plastic are 1) packaging applications
(such as new bottles), 2) sheet and film applications (including
some thermoforming applications, such as laundry scoops), 3)
strapping, 4) engineered resins applications (such as reinforced
components for automobiles), and, 5) fiber applications (such as
carpets, fabrics and fiberfill)
- PET bottle bale exports to the Far East, predominantly to
Chinese buyers,
totaled 335 million pounds, down by 24 million pounds as compared to
2014. Exports of the estimated PET bottle fraction of mixed plastic
bales increased to 14 million pounds versus 10 in 2014.
- PET bottle bale prices dropped dramatically in the US in 2015.
From the mid- to high teens in the fourth quarter of 2014, the
average price per pound of baled material declined steadily
throughout 2015, reaching average lows of $.05 to $.09 by year’s end
- 2000 tons/ year project requires Investment of about 2 Crores in
India
