- Plastic covers a
range of synthetic or semi synthetic polymerization products. They are
composed of organic condensation or addition polymers and may contain
other substances to improve performance or economics. There are few
natural polymers generally considered to be "plastics". Plastics can be
formed into objects or films or fibers.
- The history of
plastics goes back more than 100 years; however, when compared to other
materials, plastics are relatively modern. Their usage over the past
century has enabled society to make huge technological advances. The
first man-made plastic was unveiled by Alexander Parkes at the 1862
Great International Exhibition in London.Plastics did not really take
off until after the First World War, with the use of petroleum, a
substance easier to process than coal into raw materials.
- Plastics are divided
into two distinct groups: thermoplastics and thermosets. The majority of
plastics are thermoplastic, meaning that once the plastic is formed it
can be heated and reformed repeatedly. This property allows for easy
processing and facilitates recycling. The other group, the thermosets,
can not be remelted. Once these plastics are formed, reheating will
cause the material to decompose rather than melt.
- Flexural properties
of plastics are important to many applications. ASTM method D790
describes the appropriate procedure in detail. Fixtures for three point
and four point loading are used to evaluate rigid and semi-rigid
materials.Compressive properties are also important for many molded
parts as described in ASTM D695. Plastic foams in particular require
compressive testing. Strain gauge extensometers may be directly attached
to the specimens.
- The electrical
insulation, color, strength and high speed molding qualities have made
plastics well suited to electrical appliances ranging from dishwashers
and hair dryers, to power tools and automotive components. The aircraft
and aerospace industries have used engineering plastics in structural
parts and components in aircraft windows, panels and other uses due to
its strength and because it is light in weight.
- Plastics can be
molded into bottles or components of cars, such as dashboards and
fenders. Some plastics stretch and are very flexible. Other plastics,
such as polystyrene and polyurethane, can be foamed. Plastics are
materials with a seemingly limitless range of characteristics and they
have many inherent properties that can be further enhanced by a wide
range of additives to broaden their uses and applications.
- Corvaglia total
annual market volume for moulds is estimated USD 60 million, whereas
total annual closures business volume for plastic closures is estimated
USD 1.5 billion. This was the reason for Corvaglia AG to go a step
further and expand vertically in order to siphon off the earnings from
this highly profitable market. Actually, Corvaglia Closure business runs
two production sites.
- In response companies
are slashing production costs and looking to diversify into custom-made
closures as a route to margin improvement, AMI stated. About 158 billion
plastic closure units were produced in the Western European market last
year, making up about 40 per cent all closures. Of these 66 per cent of
the plastic closures were for used for beverages. Overall the production
of plastic caps and closures will grow on average by 5.6 per cent per
year, while that for metal will decline by about three per cent per
year. As a result plastic closures will account for nearly half of the
market by 2009.
- France and Germany
are the two largest markets, each producing nearly 36 billion closures
in 2004. In France the market is driven by mineral water manufacturers.
In Germany the market is driven by the drinks sector and as a location
of European production centres for leading brands in the personal care
and household cleaning sectors.
