  • Polyelectrolytes are polymers whose repeating units bear an electrolyte group. These groups will dissociate in aqueous solutions (water), making the polymers charged. Polyelectrolyte properties are thus similar to both electrolytes (salts) and polymers (high molecular weight compounds), and are sometimes called polysalts. Like salts, their solutions are electrically conductive. Like polymers, their solutions are often viscous.
  • Polyelectrolytes are both inorganic and organic exhibiting both flocculation and deflocculation properties. Inorganic polyelectrolytes exhibitingsedi­mentation properly are coagulants rather than flocculants, whereas organic polyele­ctrolytes, exhibiting sedimentation, property, are invariably high molecular weight synthetic polymers. Inorganic flocculants are salts of multivalent metals like aluminium and iron. The process of sedimentation these salts exhibit is totally different from the organic types.
  • Polyelectrolytes which contain both acidic (cationic) and basic (anionic) functional groups are known as polyampholytes. Often, these polymers undergo aqueous dissolution only in the presence of salt and coil dimensions increase as the ionic strength of the solution increases. This is primarily due to the screening of attractive electrostatic interactions within the polymer coils. As one might guess, this behavior may be advantageous to applications where a viscosifying agent in saline environments is necessary.
  • Polymers with bound positive or negative charges are referred to as polyelectrolytes, macroions, or polyions. These polymers may be synthetic, natural or modified. the synthetic polyelectrolytes include polymers that can be made by several methods, the major one being chain growth polymerization. The distinctive behavior of polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions is what separates this class of polymers from non-ionic polymers.
  • Polyelectrolytes are polymers with ionizable groups that can dissociate in solution, leaving ions of one sign bound to the chain and counterions in solution. They are of direct practical significance mainly because they are soluble in water, in contrast to most neutral hydrocarbon polymers, which are only soluble in organic solvents.
  • Polyelectrolytes have many applications, mostly related to modifying flow and stability properties of aqueous solutions and gels. For instance, they can be used to either stabilize colloidal suspensions, or to initiate flocculation (precipitation). They can also be used to impart a surface charge to neutral particles, enabling them to be dispersed in aqueous solution. They are thus often used as thickeners, emulsifiers, conditioners, flocculents, and even drag reducers. They are used in water treatment and for oil recovery.
  • Ultra-thin films were prepared by successive alternating adsorption of charged proteins and oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. After covalent crosslinking, stable protein films were obtained by washing out covalently non-bound polyelectrolytes. Films consisting of proteins and polyelectrolytes were prepared from polyelectrolytes bearing reactive chemical groups.
  • In 2003 there were more than 7 players in the US Biodegradable polymer market. The U.S. biodegradable polymer market revenues were estimated at $27.0 million, corresponding to 22.9 million pounds of unit shipment. The U.S. biodegradable polymer market revenue is forecast to grow to $67.8 million in 2010 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.2 percent.
