Information profile @ a Glance
- Coal is a fossil fuel and is far more plentiful than oil or gas,
with coal reserves worldwide in 2018 accounting for 132 years of
production. Not only does coal provide electricity, it is also an
essential fuel for steel and cement production, and other industrial
activities.
- Coal is utilized in three ways: direct combustion (through
coal-fired power plants and industrial boilers), coking, and
gasification. Among these three methods, coal gasification is the
cleanest option, and the most complex.
- Coal gasification is not only the foundation for the modern coal
chemical industry, and widely used in the oil refining, power
generation, and metallurgical industries, it is the common key
technology of these industries.
- Gasification can only reduce India's dependence upon imported oil
for transport fuels, reducing our import bill by a third. India's
transport sector will become carbon-neutral and hence, can become a
leader in the battle against climate change
- Gasification enables a wide range of energy sources including coal,
biomass and residual oils to be converted into environmentally-friendly
chemicals and fuels. Most of the effluents normally created in
atmospheric burning plants are caught before combustion and converted
into useful by-products, or captured for safe storage.
- Underground coal gasification (UCG) is basically in-situ
gasification of coal/lignite deposits to produce gas, a cleaner fuel.
UCG process is not commercially proven, very capital intensive and
requires sophisticated technology
- There are three main types of gasifiers suitable for coal
gasification namely fixed bed, fluidized bed, and entrained bed systems.
- The integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant consists of
a gasifier incorporated into a combined cycle system comprising of both
a gas turbineand a steam turbine
