  • A dietary supplement is a product taken by mouth that contains a "dietary ingredient" intended to supplement the diet.
  • There are many different types of dietary supplements, including herbs and botanicals, minerals, vitamins and amino acids, among others.
  • It is difficult to determine the quality of a dietary supplement product from its label. The degree of quality control depends on the manufacturer, the supplier, and others in the production process.
  • Dietary supplements are allowed to be sold in conventional food form so long as the product ‘is not represented as conventional food and is not represented for use as a sole item of a meal or of the diet.
