- The isosorbide is a
heterocyclic compound obtained from reaction of the double dehydration
of sorbitol , which is itself
derived from the reaction of hydrogenation of glucose.
- Isosorbide is a diol
derived from agricultural resources, non toxic, biodegradable and
thermally stable.
- The isosorbide is a
monomer that can be inserted into the macromolecular chains of type
polymers
- It is also used for the synthesis of
derivatives such as diesters, diethers, dinitrates.
- The isosorbide is a
white solid soluble in water, alcohols and ketones and almost insoluble
in hydrocarbons , the ethers and esters.
- The isosorbide is
very hygroscopic , that is to say, it tends to absorb moisture from
environmental absorption or adsorption.
- The isosorbide is
non-toxic and heat stable. This molecule does not break down that from
270 ° C in the absence of oxygen.
- Isosorbide is a used
as a diuretic used mainly to treat hydrocephalus and is also used to
treat glaucoma.
- Other medications are
derived from isosorbide, including isosorbide dinitrate and isosorbide
mononitrate, are used to treat angina pectoris. Other isosorbide-based
medicines are used as osmotic diuretics and for treatment of esophageal
varices.
- Isosorbide is used to
prevent or treat chest pain (angina). It works by relaxing the blood
vessels to the heart, so the blood and oxygen supply to the heart is
increased.
- Isosorbide is a
polmer component or additive that can significantly improve the
performance characteristics of plastics.
- The advantage of
isosorbide is that it can raise the use temperature
and performance for moldable plastics.
- Isosorbide has been
demonstrated to be a very
effective monomer for raising the glass transition
temperature of polymers. The major applications are as a copolymer with
PET for the use in bottle
production.
- The use of biobased
isosorbide as a polymer additive has the potential to reduce the amount
of petroleum feedstocks used in the polymer industry, lower emissions
(e.g., carbon dioxide), and offer a higher value-added alternative for
corn growers and other agribusinesses.
- Isosorbide can be
substituted for other
diols in order to create new polyesters,
polycarbonates etc,.
