- Corn oil (Maize
oil) is oil extracted from the germ of corn (maize). Its main use is
in cooking, where its high smoke point makes refined corn oil a
valuable frying oil. It is also a key ingredient in some margarines.
- Corn oil is a
pale-yellow drying or semidrying edible oil.
- Corn oil has a
milder taste and is less expensive than most other types of
vegetable oils.
- Corn oil is a
rich source of linoleic acid, one of two essential acids necessary
for good skin.
- Refined corn oil
is 99% triglyceride, with proportions of approximately 59%
polyunsaturated fatty acid, 24% monounsaturated fatty acid, and 13%
saturated fatty acid.
- One bushel of
corn contains 1.55 pounds of corn oil (2.8% by weight).
- Corn oil is also
a feedstock used for biodiesel. Other industrial uses for corn oil
include soap, salve, paint, rustproofing for metal surfaces, inks,
textiles, nitroglycerin, and insecticides. It is sometimes used as a
carrier for drug molecules in pharmaceutical preparations.
- Corn oil is high
in polyunsaturated fat, which is a heart-healthy fat, and low in
saturated fat, which is an unhealthy fat that can cause high
cholesterol.
- Corn oil is a
good source of vitamin E, providing 15 percent of the daily value
per tablespoon. Vitamin E is an essential nutrient that acts as an
antioxidant in the body, protecting it from free radical damage.
Corn oil has more vitamin E than olive oil or canola oil.
- The basic raw
material used for the production of corn oil is the germ obtained as
a by-product of the manufacturing of corn starch.
- Three major unit
operations are involved in the production of corn oil that are
Washing the germ, Drying the germ, Oil extraction.
- Corn oil is
finding wide application at home, restaurants, hotels , hospitals ,
and other food industries .Corn oil is edible and therefore is used
in the preparation of food items . Nowadays it is finding wide
application at all places of food preparation .
- Corn oil is
valued for its high energy value. Energy value of 100 gm corn oil is
884 kcal as against 86 kcal in case of equal amount of corn meal.
- Corn oil contains
on an average 14.3% tocopherols. These act as natural antioxi-dants
by protecting double chemical bonds from oxidation. Tocopherols
along with low levels of linoleic acid are responsible for stability
of corn oil flavour.
- The present
demand for the proposed product is estimated at 195 tonnes per
annum. The demand is expected to reach at 334 tonnes by the year
2017.
- Corn oil is a
popular vegetable oil in the US and in many other countries. Because
of its pleasant nutty flavor, its good
stability, and its popularity for making margarines, corn oil has
long been considered a premium vegetable oil.
- Among all of the
vegetable oils, corn oil ranks tenth in terms of annual production,
and it represents about 2% of the vegetable oil produced
worldwide.
- Yearly in India
nearly 2.6 thousand quintals of corn oil is produced in principal
corn-based factories. Average cumulative extraction capacity of
these factories is 2.41 thousand tonnes per day.
