Menthol crystals are produced through mint essential oil (mentha arvensis) extraction, the oil is quick frozen and the menthol crystallizes out. The crystals are crystalline in form, more oblong, similar to rock crystals. They are clear to white with a cool minty fresh odor. Soluble in alcohol and oils. Widely used in many applications such as: oral healthcare (toothpastes, mouthwashes) due to its minty taste and cooling properties; food flavour in confectionery products; flavour for beverages; over the counter treatments such as decongestants, analgesics and as a flavour in some cigarette brands. Menthol crystals are great inhalants by themselves and are easily combined into recipes. Add several drops to a bowl of hot, steamy water and carefully inhale the soothing vapors through the mouth and nose for stuffiness and bronchitis. Essential oil of partially dried leaves of Mentha arvensis was extracted by steam distillation method. From this essential oil, menthol crystals were prepared by chilling at different temperatures and yield of both essential oil and menthol crystals was 2.4 and 52.3%, respectively. One hundred Holstein male calves were assigned to investigate the effect of essential oil mixture (eucalyptus oil, menthol crystal, mint oil) supplementation in milk replacer. Jindal is the world's largest menthol producer. Its main plant is in Bombay and has a capacity of 2,500 metric tons. The company recently announced it will build a new plant with 4,000 metric tons of capacity. The world's current demand for menthol is about 12,000 metric tons, with India accounting for around 7,000 metric tons. China produced 3,500 metric tons of menthol, but that country has been reducing its domestic production, and the broker projects a further reduction of about 20 percent.
