- Potassium sulfate
(K2SO4) (in British English potassium sulphate, also called sulphate of
potash or archaically known as potash of sulfur) is a flammable white
crystalline salt which is soluble in water.
- The mineral form
of potassium sulfate, namely arcanite, is relatively rare.
- Natural resources
of potassium sulfate are minerals abundant in the Stassfurt salt.
- These are
cocrystalisations of potassium sulfate and sulfates of magnesium calcium
and sodium.
- Potassium sulfate
can be synthesized by the decomposition of potassium chloride with
sodium sulfate.
- The Hargreaves
method is basically the same process with different starting materials.
- Sulfur dioxide,
oxygen and water (the starting materials for sulfuric acid) are reacted
with potassium chloride.
- Hydrochloric acid
evaporates off.
- Potassium
fertilization in Egyptian agriculture have become very important since
the completion of the High Dam because of the deposition of the
suspended Nile silt-rich in K bearing minerals in the upstream of the
formed lake.
- World annual
production: 1.6 Mt, eq. 0.3 Mt S; Half is mined directly; and half is
produced by reaction of KCl with sulphuric
acid.
- The principal use
of potassium sulfate is as a fertilizer.
- The crude salt is
also used occasionally in the manufacture of glass.
- Sulfate of Potash
or potassium sulfate (K2SO4) has a lower salt index than Muriate of
Potash,
- Potassium sulfate
is often preferred to the latter in crops sensitive to chloride or
susceptible to fertiliser burn, eg. to the crop roots.
- It is often used
in planting mixtures for French bean, and in shallow-rooted tree crops
such as avocado and macadamia.
- Heavy applications
of potassium fertilizers can be directly related to high potassium
levels in grape juice which can have a detrimental effect on red wine
quality via high juice pH, and reduce color and flavour.
- The potash market
is unique in the sense that only 12 countries produce the mineral and
150 countries consume it. Canada, Russia, Belarus, and the Middle East
account for the majority of production, while Asia and Latin America are
the largest consumers
- Over the past 40
years, the compounded annual growth rate of potash consumption stood at
2%.
- The demand is
expected to be of the order of 3% over the next five years on
projections of rising demand mainly arising from China, India, and
Brazil
- Developing
countries like China, India and Brazil have been
under-applying potash for years, depleting the potassium content
in their soils and reflecting in poor crop yields. These countries
are expected to lead market growth
