- A rectified spirit,
rectified alcohol, or neutral spirit is highly concentrated ethanol
which has been purified by means of repeated distillation, a
process that is called rectification.
- Rectified spirits are
used in mixed drinks, in the production of liqueurs, for medicinal
purposes, and as a household solvent.
- Neutral grain spirits
are rectified spirits made from grain.
- Rectified spirits are
illegal for nonmedical purposes in some nations (including India), and
were banned until recently[when?] in Canada, but they
are legal in
most Western nations.
- The rectified spirit
from the rectifier is superheated with steam in feed
super-heater.
- Distillation is the
separation of the constituents of a liquid mixture by partial
vaporization and subsequent condensation, taking advantage of
differences in volatility.
- Rectification is the
multiple distillation of liquids in direct contact with steam in
counterflow.
- Rectified spirit (RS)
consumption is likely to decline 20 per cent this year on falling demand
from the chemical industry, according to estimates made by industry
officials.
- RS is widely used as
intermediates for manufacturing various chemical acidic products such as
acidic acid and other chemicals such as mono
ethylene glycol (MEG),
which is used to make fibre.
- A scarcity of rectified
spirit in West Bengal (WB) has brought the bottling operations of
organised sector country liquor manufacturers to a halt, disrupting
distribution through licensed retail vendors.
- Sugar companies will
shift to
producing more ethanol at current prices is also unlikely
considering other by-products of the distillation
process such as
rectified spirit and potable alcohol fetch a higher price at a
relatively lower cost to produce as
compared to ethanol.
