- Styrene-butadiene or styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is a
synthetic rubber copolymer consisting of styrene and butadiene. It
has good abrasion resistance and good aging stability when protected
by additives, and is widely used in car tires, where it may be
blended with natural rubber.
- It was originally developed prior to World War II in Germany.
Industrial manufacture began during World War 2, where it was used
extensively by the USA to replace the Far-East natural rubber
supplies captured by the Japanese.
- Styrene butadiene latexes usually have a resin content of about
50%. The styrene/butadiene ratio varies from 54:46 to 80:20.
- Most are carboxylated by the use of such acids as maleic [HOOCCHCHCOO],
fumaric [HOOCCHCHCOOH], acrylic [CH2CHCOOH], or methacrylic
[CH2C(CH3)COOH].
- SB latexes are used in carpet backing and paper coatings. The
other styrenics are used in paints, coatings, and floor polishes,
plus many other uses.
- SB latex is made by emulsion polymerization. The reaction is
started with free-radical initiators. The emulsion consists for 5 -
10 wt.% of non-rubber, more than half being
emulsifiers (others components: initiators, modifiers, inorganic
salts, free alkali and short stops).
- A polymer string consists of random blocks of styrene and
butadiene. Another way of producing SB latex is emulsification of SB
rubber: SB rubber particles are dissolved in water with dispersing
and wetting agents.
- SBR LATEX is a carboxylated styrene butadiene copolymer latex
admixture that is designed as an integral adhesive for cement bond
coats, mortars and concrete to improve bond strength and chemical
resistance.
- However, on the basis of calorimetric measurements, concluded
that
styrene/butadiene latex interacts with dispersed calcium carbonate.
- Concredamp, produced by the Duresol Corporation, is a
commercially available concrete
admixture marketed specifically for increasing damping.
- Concredamp is a vegetable gum
suspended in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) latex. The gum results
from soybean oil reacted with sulfur monochloride.
- The vegetable gum and latex are mixed at a ratio of 6 to 44. The
emulsion has a measured specific gravity of 1.025 and contains 48%
solids by mass.
- OMNOVA Solutions announced a price increase of $0.12 per dry
pound on styrene butadiene (SB) latex for carpet and related
markets, effective February 18, 2012. This increase is driven by the
escalation in raw material costs utilized to manufacture SB latex
products and is in addition to previously announced increases.
