  • Vanadium is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol V and atomic number 23. A rare, soft and ductile element, vanadium is found combined in certain minerals and is used mainly to produce certain alloys. It is one of the 26 elements commonly found in living things.
  • Vanadium is a soft and ductile, silver-grey metal. It has good resistance to corrosion by alkalis, sulfuric and hydrochloric acid. It oxidizes readily at about 933 K. Vanadium has good structural strength and a low fission neutron cross section, making it useful in nuclear applications. It shares with chromium and manganese the property of having valency oxides with acid properties.
  • In biology, a vanadium atom is an essential component of some enzymes, particularly the vanadium nitrogenase used by some nitrogen-fixing micro-organisms. Vanadium is essential to ascidians or sea squirts in vanadium chromagen proteins. The concentration of vanadium in their blood is more than 100 times higher than the concentration of vanadium in the seawater around them. Rats and chickens are also known to require vanadium in very small amounts and deficiencies result in reduced growth and impaired reproduction.
  • Vanadium is never found unbound in nature but it does occur in about 65 different minerals among which are patronite VS4, vanadinite Pb5(VO4)3Cl, and carnotite K2(UO2)2(VO4)2.3H2O. Vanadium is also present in bauxite, and in carbon containing deposits such as crude oil, coal, oil shale and tar sands. Vanadium has also been detected spectroscopically in light from the Sun and some other stars.
  • Vanadium in the form of ammonium monovanadate supplemented in drinking water ad libitum has been found to be highly effective in reducing rumor incidence and preneoplastic foci on DMH-induced colorectal carcinogenesis. These findings suggest that vanadium administration can suppress colon carcinogenesis in rats.
  • Vanadium, an element of complex chemistry is of considerable scientific and biological interest nowadays, because of its diverse physiological properties with narrow thresholds between essential and toxic doses. Vanadium is observed to be capable of exhibiting some unique beneficial effects particularly, its anticarcinogenic potential under a very low dose without any adverse toxicity.
  • Most of the vanadium (about 80%) produced is used as ferrovanadium or as a steel additive. Mixed with aluminium in titanium alloys is used in jet engines and high speed air-frames, and steel alloys are used in axles, crankshafts, gears and other critical components. Vanadium alloys are also used in nuclear reactors because vanadium has low neutron-adsorption abilities and it does not deform in creeping under high temperatures.
  • Vanadium oxide  is used as a catalyst in manufacturing sulfuric acid and maleic anhydride and in making ceramics. It is added to glass to produce green or blue tint. Glass coated with vanadium dioxide can block infrared radiation at some specific temperature. Vanadium helps in the metabolism of cholesterol and sugar in the body, thereby preventing the occurrence of heart attacks.
  • In the first six months of 2006 China’s production of specialty steels which contain vanadium grew by 22.5%1, far outpacing growth in total crude steel production. This trend is projected to continue for an extended period, on a global level, as emerging economies (China, India and others) continue to industrialise. Macquarie Bank forecasts2 total world steel production to grow at an annual 5.8%, with China increasing her share to 40% by 2010. Increasing intensity of use, coupled with increasing steel production, will see vanadium consumption in steel use grow by at least 7% per year.
  • In 2005, a surge in global steel production created an unprecedented demand for vanadium, reduced stockpiles, and sent the metal to an all time high of US$16.3/pound. To meet to the high demand, producer output reached a record 60,000 tonnes and vanadium inventories declined. Since 2005, demand for Vanadium has remained strong, which has put more pressure on the supply side. This pressure has been compounded by the closure of some vanadium mines throughout 2000-2004 when prices were depressed. Currently, steel production is expected to remain strong until at least 2010. This is expected to help create a sustained period of increasing demand for vanadium.
