- RFL adhesives (RFLs)
are used to treat textiles to make them bondable to rubber. RFL stands
for Resorcinol Formaldehyde Latex. These three building blocks of RFLs
are combined chemically to make a very strong, heat resistant, highly
flexible adhesive which is ideally suited for rubber-to-fabric
adhesion.
- Resorcinol is used in
resins as an UV absorber. It is used in manufacturing fluorescent and
leather dyes and adhesives (resorcinol formaldehyde resins). It is used
as a pharmaceutical to treat acne and other greasy skin conditions in
combination with other acne treatments such as sulfur. It is used as an
anti-dandruff agent in shampoo and sunscreen cosmetics.
- Formaldehyde is also
used to make numerous other chemicals, used in personal care products
such as toothpaste. Many of these are polyfunctional alcohols such as
pentaerythritol, which is used to make paints and explosives.
- Resorcinol, a reddish
brown, flaky material, and formaldehyde in a water solution.
(Formaldehyde is a gas which in water solution is called “formalin”.)
Complete reaction of resorcinol with formaldehyde yields a resinous,
stable solid (i.e., the fully set adhesive).
- Resorcinol adhesives
provide waterproof bonds that resist attack from weather and chemical
reagents, and that are impervious to and insects. They are one of the
few adhesives that can offer this performance when cured at room or
intermediate temperatures.
- Hydroxymethylated
resorcinol (HMR), is a dilute, alkaline mixture of resorcinol and
formaldehyde which continues to react. It forms
a
resorcinol-formaldehyde polymer in time but provides a coupling
action between the wood and other resins that a common
resorcinol-formaldehyde adhesive.
- Alkaline hydrolysis of
protein-rich fractions from soybeans provides a material that, when
combined with phenol-resorcinol -formaldehyde resins, forms a strong gel
within seconds and that further polymerizes at room temperature to
provide bonds with the strength and durability required for use in
structural lumber.
- Resorcinol-formaldehyde
resins are useful because they cure at room temperature, but are very
expensive. The coreactant or combination of coreactants used with
formaldehyde is selected depending on the costs, production conditions,
and expected performance of the product.
- Resorcinol, or 1, 3
dihydroxybenzene, is a common chemical intermediate that finds utility
in applications ranging from wood glue resins to leather dyes to
permanent hair coloring products. Resorcinol is also found in some, but
not all, foam-in-place insulation formulations where it functions as a
foam stabilizer, a formaldehyde absorbent and a cross linking agent that
improves hydrolysis resistance of foams.
- Resorcinol is also an
ingredient of wood glues used in the furniture industry. These glues,
known as resorcinol formaldehyde adhesives, have a dark, reddish-brown
color and are known for their propensity to stain light wood with a
dark, reddish glue line.
