  • Rue (Ruta) is a genus of strongly scented evergreen subshrubs 20-60 cm tall, in the family Rutaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, Macaronesia and southwest Asia. Different authors accept between 8-40 species in the genus. The most well-known species is the Common Rue.The leaves are bipinnate or tripinnate, with a feathery appearance, and green to strongly glaucous blue-green in colour. The flowers are yellow, with 4-5 petals, about 1 cm diameter, and borne in cymes. The fruit is a 4-5 lobed capsule, containing numerous seeds.
  • An evergreen shrub growing to 0.75m. It is hardy to zone 8. It is in leaf all year, in flower from June to September. The scented flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 1 out of 5 for usefulness. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires dry or moist soil.
  • Rue is commonly grown for its aromatic blue-green foliage and small, fringed, yellow blooms . It is important that plant has ample moisture and well-drained soil the first year. After that, the plant is fairly drought tolerant. Excellent for use in rock gardens and borders. Start seeds in flats and then transplant outside.
  • Extraction of alkaloids from natural products such as Hyoscyamus muticus, Datura stramonium and Ruta graveolens consists of the use of a sonicated solution containing a surfactant as extracting agent. The alkaloids are precipitated by Mayer reagent, dissolved in an alkaline solution, and then extracted with chloroform.
  • Cold Percolation is a traditional method of extraction used by herbalists throughout the world and it's very simple. Above a flask or vessel is suspended a cone or tube. The bottom of the tube has a perforated base which holds ground herb in place. Solvent is poured into the top of the tube where it soaks through the herb leaching out the extract and then falling out the bottom end of the tube into the flask. If desired, the percolation tube can be wrapped in heating tape to help facilitate the extraction.
  • Plant this strong-smelling repellent in beds, in hedges and along paths. If planted around the house it helps to repel flies. Prune the plant if it takes up too much space. Rue can be added to stews. Rue tea is said to be good for coughs, croup and bronchitis but it should be taken in small quantities and not repeatedly.
  • Medicinally it has been used in many countries. Some of its other uses include a disinfectant. As a growing plant or its dried and crushed leaves are used as an insect repellant. Dried plants are put into linen cupboards to repel moths. The essential oil obtained from the leaves and shoots is also used for perfumery and landscaping.
  • Ruta graveolens L. is a flavonoid-containing medicinal plant with various biological properties. In this study, the effects of R. graveolens extract on aldehyde oxidase, a molybdenum hydroxylase, are investigated. Aldehyde oxidase was partially purified from liver homogenates of mature male guinea pigs by heat treatment and ammonium sulphate precipitation. The total extract was obtained by macerating the aerial parts of R. graveolens in MeOH 70% and the effect of this extract on the enzyme activity was assayed using phenanthridine, vanillin and benzaldehyde as substrates.
