BiOH polyols are
made from vegetable oils such as soybean oil and are used in the
manufacture of flexible foam for bedding, furniture and automobiles.
- Polyols are
polymer products with an extended carbon chain and multiple reactive
functional
groups. Many vegetable-based oils have structures that lend
themselves well as a base for these products, leading to the
production of bio-based polyols.
- With polyols
there is an opportunity to make the process greener: a recent
development is the use of bio-based polyols. These are obtained from renewable sources
such as soybeans.
-
Production of bio-polyols reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 36%
compared to traditional petroleum-based polyols, the use of
non-renewable energy by 61% and energy overall by 23%, according to
the company's preliminary analysis.
-
Polyurethane foam
made with bio-polyol is renewable, biodegradable and its quality
is comparable to petroleum-based foam.
-
Poly-Green Technologies recently purchased a 50-gallon reactor that
can produce
hundreds of thousands of gallons of bio-polyol a year.
- Until 2006, price
increases for conventional polyols helped to stimulate interest in
biobased polyols. However, rising demand for biodiesel has driven up
natural oil prices and subsequent costs of bio-based polyols.
