- Alkyl acrylates are
clear, volatile liquid; slightly soluble in water and complete soluble
in alcohols, ethers and almost organic solvents.
- Acrylate esters
containing a double bond and functional carboxyl group are used chiefly
as a monomer or co-monomer in making acrylic and modacrylic
fibres.
- Butyl acrylate is a
clear, flammable liquid with a fruity, pungent odor.
- Butyl acrylate is used
in the preparation of polymers and copolymers with acrylic acid and its
derivatives, methyl acrylate, vinyl chloride, butadiene, styrene.
- Butyl acrylate is a
skin, ocular, and respiratory tract irritant in animals. It can cause
skin sensitization.
- Butyl acrylate is made
from ester grade acrylic acid and a small excess of butanol in a reactor
bed at elevated temperature extracted at a yield of about 94-97%. It is
usually integrated to an acrylic acid facility.
- Two-stage seeded
emulsion copolymerization of butyl acrylate with tert-butyl 3-
isopropenylcumylperoxide (D120) was performed at 70°C .
- Emulsion graft
polymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile onto the copolymer of butyl
acrylate was initiated by peroxy bonds in the D120 units of the backbone
chains at 120°C.

prepare graft copolymers has been investigated intensively including

acrylate-co-styrene)–silver nanocomposites were prepared by
g-irradiation of microemulsions and metallic silver nanoparticles of
near uniform size were found to be well dispersed in the polymer
matrix.

polymers with controlled molecular weights and polydispersities. These
processes enable chemists to synthesize polymers with predictable
molecular weights and block copolymers with high blocking

- It is used in
formulating paints and dispersions for paints, inks, and adhesives.
- It is used in making
cleaning products, antioxidant agents, amphoteric surfactants. It is
used in making aqueous resins and dispersions for textiles and
papers.
- Butyl acrylate is also
a very useful feedstock for chemical syntheses, because it readily
undergoes addition reactions with a wide variety of organic and
inorganic compounds.
- A number of factors
drive demand for acrylates. Typically, acrylate trends align with the
economy; as the economy improves, so does demand for acrylate products.
- The acrylates market is
expected to grow at or above 4 percent per year.
- The US is the largest
consumer at about 429,970 tonnes/year, followed by Western Europe at
412,630, Asia-Pacific at 365,960 tonnes/year. 5%/year in Africa, 6%/year
in Asia and the Middle East, 4%/year in Australia, New Zealand and
eastern Europe, 3%/year in Americas and western Europe, and 1%/year in
Japan.
- Styrene (St) and
butyl-acrylate (BA) monomers of a pure reagent grade were obtained from
a reputed company in USA and used directly without further
purification.
