- Dimercaprol is a
chelating (KEE-late-ing) agent. A chelating agent is capable of removing
a heavy metal, such as lead or mercury, from the blood.
- Dimercaprol is used to
treat poisoning with arsenic, gold, or mercury. It is also used together
with another medication called edetate disodium (EDTA) to treat lead
poisoning.
- Dimercaprol contains
not less than 98.5 per cent and not more than the equivalent of 101.5
per cent of (2RS)-2,3 disulfanylpropan-1-ol.
- Dimercaprol is a clear,
colorless or pale yellow liquid. It has a mercaptan-like, disagreeable
odor. It is miscible with methanol and with ethanol (99.5). It is
soluble in peanut oil, and sparingly soluble in water. It shows no
optical rotation.
- Dimercaprol has a
strong odour and gives the breath an unpleasant mercaptan-like odour.
- Dimercaprol is prepared
by the bromination of allyl alcohol to glycerol di-bromine-hydrine
followed by reaction with sodium hydrosulfide under pressure. It can
also be prepared by hydrogenizing hydroxide propylene trisulfide
.
- BAL in Oil (Dimercaprol
Injection USP) is indicated in the treatment of arsenic, gold and
mercury poisoning. It is indicated in acute lead poisoning when used
concomitantly with Edetate Calcium Disodium Injection USP.
- Dimercaprol Injection
USP is effective for use in acute poisoning by mercury salts if therapy
is begun within one or two hours following ingestion. It is not very
effective for chronic mercury poisoning.
- Dimercaprol as one of
the main antidotes used in the management of
poisoning by lead and
other heavy metals |
