- The chemical
compound 1,2-dichloroethane, commonly known by its old name of ethylene
dichloride (EDC)
- EDC is a chlorinated
hydrocarbon, mainly used to produce vinyl chloride monomer.
- EDC is a
colourless liquid with a chloroform-like odour.
- 1,2-Dichloroethane
is used generally as an intermediate for other organic chemical
compounds, and as a solvent.
- In Industry
sources Ethylene dichloride is used in refinery in making leaded petrol,
plastic manufacturing process, chemical manufacturing sectors,
in paint and varnish manufacturing .
- EDC is made by the
chlorination of ethylene via one of two processes: direct chlorination
and Oxychlorination.
- In Direct
Chlorination is the reaction of chlorine and ethylene
- In
the oxychlorination process, pure ethylene and hydrogen chloride, mixed
with oxygen, are reacted at 200-300oC and 4-6 bar in the presence of a
catalyst, usually cupric chloride.
- The low temperature
process has the advantage of low by-product formation but requires more
energy to recover the EDC.
- The high temperature
process utilises the heat of reaction in the distillation of the EDC,
leading to considerable energy savings.
- Many EDC plants are
integrated with vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production.
- EDC demand is
expected to increase globally at an average annual rate of approximately
3.5 percent, helped in large measure by growing demand in Asia
.
- Ethylene dichloride,
being flammable, is rarely used alone.
- When mixed with
carbon tetrachloride is extensively used as a liquid grain
fumigant for bulk storage in bins or on floor.
- As a good apolar
aprotic solvent, 1,2-dichloroethane is used as degreaser and paint
remover.
