• Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted.
• The ores are usually rich in iron oxides and vary in colour from dark grey, bright yellow, deep purple, to rusty red.

• The government is torn between its conflicting intentions to conserve the iron ore deposits for the domestic industry and to export them to international buyers should not be an alibi for adopting a faulty policy paradigm.
• The iron ore mining sector in Bellary district in Karnataka and the expanding web of illegal and corrupt practices that sustains it are finally to be brought under official scrutiny.
