- Isopropyl alcohol also
isopropanol, iso, isopro, rubbing alcohol, or the abbreviation IPA is a
common name for propan-2-ol, a colorless, flammable chemical compound
with a strong odor.
- Isopropanol is a clear
and flammable liquid at room temperature with odour resembles that of a
mixture of ethanol and acetone.
- It has the molecular
formula C3H8O and is the simplest example of a secondary alcohol, where
the alcohol carbon is attached to two other carbons.
It is an isomer
of propanol.
- Isopropyl alcohol is a
flammable, colorless liquid with an odor resembling alcohol. The air
odor threshold concentration of isopropyl alcohol has been reported as
22 parts per million (ppm) parts of air.
- Isopropyl alcohol is
produced by combining water and propene. There are two processes for
achieving this: indirect hydration via the sulfuric acid process and
direct hydration.
- Pure isopropyl alcohol
is made by azeotropic distillation of the "wet" isopropyl alcohol using
either diisopropyl ether or cyclohexane as azeotroping agents.
- Isopropyl alcohol is
also commonly used as a cleaner and solvent in industry.
- It can also be used to
remove stains from any fabric, wood, cotton, etc.
- Isopropyl alcohol also
works well at removing smudges, dirt, and fingerprints from cell phones
and PDAs. It is effective at removing residual glue from sticky
labels.
- Isopropyl alcohol is
commonly found in many cosmetics and food products.
- Isopropyl alcohol is
used in cleaning electronic devices such as contact pins, magnetic tape
deck and floppy disk drive heads, the lenses of lasers in optical disc
drives and removing thermal paste from CPUs.
- A comparison between
70% isopropyl alcohol and 1.5% lauricidin to test their antimicrobial
properties was done using a protocol validated by US
Food and Drug
Administration (FDA).
- Canadian production of
isopropyl alcohol is estimated at roughly 185 million pounds per year,
about half of which is exported. Shell Canada, the only Canadian
producer, operates a 200-million-pound-per-year plant at Corunna,
Ontario.
- In the US, the use of
isopropyl alcohol in the production of derivatives, especially for the
production of mono isopropyl amine for herbicides continues to be the
fastest growing segment.
